Vitrification has also now extended to eggs allowing for fertility preservation in women who may wish to delay child bearing for whatever reason.

The increasing use of frozen embryo transfer at this facility, since 2012, and elsewhere attests to the gains made from the now accepted practice of embryo vitrification (a rapid freezing method, contrasting the previous slow freeze method).

The advantages are

  • Distancing the time of embryo transfer from the stimulated cycle where a potential less than optimal endometrial lining (non physiological) may be present.
  • In the case of high estradiol lessen the chance of hyperstimulation syndrome
  • Encourage embryo culture through to the blast stage allowing for better selection for transfer

Vitrification has also now extended to eggs allowing for fertility preservation in women who may wish to delay child bearing for whatever reason.

The reports from the literature in recent years, indicating good survival rates after thawing, has stimulated an increasing interest in egg freezing to the point that some major companies (eg Google) as see in the news, are offering it as an employment incentive.

It still stands that if a woman has a partner but wishes to delay a family for some time, freezing embryos is always preferable as an embryo is multicellular and lacks the relative increased vulnerability of a single cell such as an oocyte(egg). Egg vitrification however still remains a good insurance policy for the some women particularly if this procedure is done prior to 35 years, prior to the average time egg quality and numbers start to decline precipitously. After this age eggs can still be retrieved and frozen but with increasing age to 40 years there is the increasing concern that aging eggs may be more vulnerable but especially are more likely to harbour the intrinsic deficiencies due to aging  which unfortunately cannot be avoided.
