It is no secret that diet has the ability to be both harmful and helpful when it comes to health. So which foods are most important for future fathers to avoid? And are there any foods that can be added to boost fertility?
It comes as no surprise to most of us that smoking, alcohol, recreational drugs, environmental toxins (such as dioxins and PCBs) and some medications are damaging to sperm. Many have also been told that excess heat from hot tubs, hot baths, saunas, laptops and tight shorts can affect sperm quality and count. When it comes to diet, a growing body of evidence suggests that those consuming the Standard American Diet (SAD) may be more likely to have problems conceiving. A diet high in fatty, salty, sugary and processed foods is the perfect storm for health complications and disease, including diabetes and obesity, both of which are correlated with lower sperm counts and fertility in men. On the other hand, a diet high in fruits and vegetables, good fats and whole grains can improve sperm parameters. These healthy choices are packed with sperm friendly nutrients, vitamins and minerals, and also help control weight and blood sugar.
